The town is situated in the Adige River valley in the Trentino-Alto/Südtirol region. The current capital city of the autonomous region of Trento was once a part of the Austria-Hungary region. Trento was overpowered by the Romans in the 1st Century BC. Much later in 1027, Conrad II, the Holy Roman Emperor built the Prince-Bishop of Trento. The city was under his reign late until the 19th Century. A fight at Calliano in the 15th century prevented forces from the Republic of Venice from entering some of the Trentino regions. After the fall of Napoleon's Empire, Trento was then assigned to the Habsburg Empire. This Italian city was adversely affected by World War I and a bunch of fierce battles were fought on this land. At the end of the war, Trento and the area around it were annexed to Italy by signing the Treaty of Saint-Germain, in 1919.
