Ravenna, an Italian city located in the Emilia-Romagna region, is famous for its Byzantine and Roman architecture.  Ravenna with its famous mosaics became the centre of Christian Art in the 5th century. The city was a part of the Roman Empire from 402-476. In AD 540, Justinian, the founder of the Byzantine Empire, took control of Ravenna and transformed it into a strong pillar of the Empire. If you are a history or architecture lover, then Ravenna is the right place for you. In 1996, UNESCO added eight monuments of the Christian Era, situated in Ravenna, to the World Heritage Sites List.

Sant'Apollinare Nuovo

Sant'Apollinare Nuovo is a famous Basilica Church located in the heart of Ravenna. Sant'Apollinare Nuovo is said to be one of the best sites to see if you are passing the nearby cities of Ravenna, namely Venice and Bologna. Sant'Apollinare Nuovo used to be a royal church in the regime of Theodoric, who belonged to the Ostrogothic Empire. The Basilica showcases a mixture of the western as well as the eastern styles. The interior of the church is usually bare-faced and this draws the tourists' attention to the walls above their heads, which display inexplicable forms of mosaics. If you are someone who loves to admire artistic and historical sites, then you should definitely pay a visit to this Basilica.

Arian Baptistery

The Arian Baptistery is another contribution made by Theodoric the Great. It was built between the fifth and the sixth centuries. It was during the same time that the Sant'Apollinare Nuovo was also being constructed. Arian Baptistery is one of the eight sites that have been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Later, in 540, a monastery was attached to the Baptistery. Later, after the destruction of the Second World War, everything around the Baptistery was destroyed, which exposed the exterior of the Baptistery for the first time. People often like to visit this place to look at the ruins of the Second World War and what has remained of the original structure.

Tomb of Theodoric

This is the place where the tomb of the greatest king of the Ostrogothic Empire is located. Unlike the famous Christian and Byzantine architecture, this place has been constructed in a rather unique manner. The Tomb of Theodoric is also a part of the World Heritage Sites List created by UNESCO. The tomb is famous for its long sustenance from the late-Roman to the medieval ages. However, the body of Theodoric was removed from here after the Byzantine Empire took control and conquered the Goths. The inner area of the tomb is usually empty and that is the reason why tourists can enter the place for a quick peep. This is one of the most visited places in the city of Ravenna.
