Although Ras Al Khaimah is frequently associated with the mediaeval harbour and city of Julfar, it was actually a distinct community that gradually expanded to include the province that once belonged to Julfar. Ras Al Khaimah's Emirate has a distinguished archaeological past and a long cultural history. One of the few areas in the nation and the world where there has been continuous human occupancy for 7,000 years is Ras Al Khaimah. The emirate is home to 1,000 historical and archaeological monuments, dating from various historical periods, including remains of the Umm Al Nar Culture dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. Ras Al Khaimah has been under many reigns and has witnessed various cultures. The oldest era is the Ubaid Period (5500-3800 BC) where the Bedouin desert inhabitants made their dwellings on the shore. The pottery remains, stone implements, and nets found during the excavation show the Bedouin's presence there. The discovery of earthenware pots from Mesopotamia created using similar or the same pottery techniques found in the same period provides evidence of trade between the two regions.
