New York's history is quite long; it witnessed Dutch rule, conflicts over the Federal Constitution in the 18th Century, English rule, the American Revolution, and some significant developments in America, during the modern historical period. Over these decades, the city has been flourishing through changes and settlements. The earliest European settlers in the city were the Dutch, who constructed Fort Nassau in 1614, the location of what is now known as New York. Henry Hudson, the second European, navigated to the city in 1609; the Hudson river is named after him. The island of Manhattan, in New York, was given to the English in 1674 as a result of the Treaty of Westminster, and they dubbed it New York in honour of the Duke of York. King James II created the Dominion of New England a few years later, which included all the surrounding colonies. A few years later, the city became an important part of the world as Columbia University was established in 1754.
