Best Time To Visit Bilbao
Bilbao is a great destination for a romantic getaway, but it is also a great city to visit with friends, thanks to its many pubs and bustling nightlife, or as a family, thanks to its many kid-friendly activities. You can go to the beach and the mountains in less than 30 minutes by train. The optimum time to visit the city is between June and mid-September. At this time of year, the weather is the most pleasant and consistent. At this time of year, fogs are more likely to develop due to a change in weather.

Cuisine
Bilbao bars often have a long counter piled high with plates of different Pintxos, or Tapas, to eat. In addition to the classic pintxos of potato and onion omelets, you'll find more modern fare like grilled foie gras with white beans and fruity sauce on pintxos (small plates). It is common for pintxos to be served "cold," although they can also be warmed up if desired. They also provide "warm pintxos," which are prepared right there and then. These tend to be pricier, but they are also better! Most people in this region enjoy their pintxos while sipping txakoli, red wine, or zurito (small beer).

Bus
At the end of 2019, Bilbao's new bus station was opened. Estación de Bilbao Intermodal is the current name for what was once known as Termibus. Near the San Mamés football stadium, there is a brand new metro station here. Near the bus station are the San Mamés metro, tram, and railway stations. This terminal serves as the departure point for all long-distance buses. Bizkaibus operates regional buses in the province of Biscay that departs from this location. The airport shuttle bus also makes a stop here. From Bilbobus, a single city bus ride costs 1.35€. Using the Barik Card, a one-way fare costs 0.66€.
Taxi
Airport-to-city taxi travel takes 15 minutes and costs roughly 20 to 25€. Once you get to Bilbao, you'll see that the city's core can be easily explored on foot, and you won't need a vehicle more than a few times. If that's the case, it may be more convenient to take a taxi than to use public transportation. If you're going in a group, splitting the cost of a taxi instead of several tram/metro tickets can save you money. White taxis in Bilbao, Spain have a horizontal red stripe running down the side, making them easy to see.

Train
The residents of Bilbao name the main train station of Bilbao as "Estación del norte," which translates to "North station" in Spanish. Right across the river from the old town, it is in the middle of the city. Spain's national train service is RENFE. EuskoTren, the Basque railway for short-distance excursions inside the Basque Country, is also available. Generally speaking, it operates regularly and is reasonably priced. Lovely rural vistas may also be seen from here. But on the other hand, it is quite sluggish! On average, trips by bus or automobile take twice as long.

Metro
Sir Norman Foster developed the new metro system in Bilbao. It consists of three lines that connect Bilbao's central area with the suburbs and other cities. San Mamés bus station in Bilbao, as well as two stops along with Gran Va (Moyua and Abando) and one in the old town, would be the most important stops for a visitor (Casco Viejo). When in Bilbao, even if you don't actually need to use the subway, it can be worth your time. It's truly one of a kind!
Bilbao’s metro is divided into 3 zones and the ticket price depends on how many zones your journey will cross. All of Bilbao’s center belongs to zone 1. As another option, the tourist card Bilbao Bizkaia Card includes unlimited use of the public transport not only in Bilbao but in all of Biscay (buses, tram, metro, and even the funicular to Artxanda).

A very unique way to visit Bilbao is from the river with the boats of Bilboats. There are two standard routes:
-
Sailing Bilbao: 1h trip through the city center (no stops). Price: 13€ for adults, 9€ for senior citizens and children (5 - 10 years old), and 1 € for smaller children (up to 4 years old).
-
Sailing to sea: 2h trip from Bilbao’s downtown all the way up to Getxo’s Hanging Bridge, where the river meets the Cantabrian sea (no stops). Price: 19€ for adults, 13€ for senior citizens and children (5 - 10 years old), and 1 € for smaller children (up to 4 years old).
The rates include audio guide services in various languages (Spanish, Basque, English, French, German, and Italian) with explanations of the route, its history, buildings, bridges, and other constructions. The boats depart from the jetty located next to the city hall bridge in the Pío Baroja Square. The scheduled departure times depend on the time of the year. Check their website for up-to-date information.
CARS
Getting into the heart of Bilbao might be a bit of a challenge. The ancient town is almost entirely pedestrian-only due to the abundance of one-way streets. As a rule of thumb, if you don't plan to leave the city, you won't need or desire a car. In the long run, using public transportation and/or taxis is a more cost-effective alternative than parking and petrol. Look for a parking garage ahead of time (or better yet book a hotel that includes parking) and put it as your GPS location before arriving in the city center.
